About this extension
Japanese Auto Ruby 95 is a Firefox extension that adds furigana (ruby annotations) to kanji on web pages. The “95” in its name represents our commitment to achieving high accuracy; it does not guarantee that every reading will be correct.

To determine readings, the extension uses a bundled dictionary containing approximately 760,000 entries, compiled from the following sources:
  • A compact dictionary created from UniDic for Contemporary Written Japanese
  • Headings extracted from the National Diet Library Subject Headings (NDLSH) whose readings are unambiguous and do not conflict with the existing dictionary
  • Proper nouns extracted from readings explicitly provided through Wikidata’s “Japanese name reading” property (P1814), limited to entries whose readings are unambiguous and do not conflict with the existing dictionary

When a reliable decision cannot be made—for example, when a word has multiple possible readings—the extension avoids adding ruby and prioritizes relatively high-confidence readings.

Simply press the toolbar button to add ruby to the page you are viewing. Added ruby can be removed with a single button, and reloading the page will also restore its original appearance.

Existing HTML ruby, form fields, links, buttons, code blocks, and similar elements are left unchanged. Depending on a web page’s structure and presentation, some text may not be processed.

Dictionary decompression and reading determination are performed entirely on the user’s device. The extension does not collect or transmit page content, browsing history, entered data, personal information, or usage data. It also contains no advertising, analytics, tracking features, or communication with external servers.

Notices and license documents covering the sources and terms of use for UniDic, NDLSH, and Wikidata are included in the extension package. Data derived from Wikidata is used under the CC0 terms applicable to Wikidata’s structured data.

This extension is not provided, supervised, or endorsed by the National Diet Library, the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics, the UniDic Consortium, the Wikimedia Foundation, or any Wikidata data provider or contributor.
Developer comments
I created this extension to help people who are unfamiliar with kanji read Japanese web pages without being stopped by difficult characters.

“95” represents the extension’s approach: rather than forcing ruby onto every kanji, it prioritizes relatively reliable readings and aims for high accuracy.

I will continue improving the dictionary and ruby display processing.
